Biometric Fingerprint Devices In The Workplace

| 22nd April 2019

Biometrics in the workplace is becoming increasingly more popular, and fingerprint devices are the most common. They are quick and easy to use and provide added security for employers. We sat down with our CEO, Thomas Bednarik, to get some answers on frequently asked questions about biometric fingerprint devices in the workplace.

Biometric Fingerprint Devices In The Workplace

  1. Why do fingerprint devices work so well in the workplace for time and attendance?

Biometric identification is the most secure form of employee identification, as the data is unique to the individual and cannot be shared. A lot of employers are also moving towards biometrics to eliminate buddy punching from the workplace environment.

  2. Which products do you recommend for high-volume clock-in environments?

For speedy input, many employers still use all forms of card credentials, like barcode, magnetic, and proximity.  Regarding proximity, there is a strong shift in enterprise accounts to go with highly secure proximity cards that are offered by many vendors.

  3. Which products do you recommend for environments with a lot of wear-and-tear?

The face recognition product is clearly the best for environments that are dirty or where the workers wear gloves, since there is no need for the employee to touch the device to clock in or out.  Once enrolled, the employee just needs to look into the device and the punch will be registered.

  4. Which products have another built-in option for identification in case I have employees whose fingerprints don’t function well?

Most fingerprint devices will not work with 100% of the employees due to dryness of the finger or other peculiar characteristics.  In this case, those employees are usually provided a credential to swipe or, in some cases, the supervisor will do an approval over-ride at the device when the employees punches in.
